A tractor-trailer traveling on U.S. 89 in southern Utah was hit Dec. 4 by a van carrying 14 Mexican nationals, The Associated Press reported. In the van, two children and two adults were killed, and others were critically hurt.
The truckdriver, identified by the Highway Patrol as Lawrence Lawson of Kanab, UT, was not harmed.
The van hit the front of the truck at about 5 a.m., Highway Patrol Sgt. Doug McCleve told AP. By the time troopers arrived at the accident site, near the Arizona state line, passers-by had taken some of the survivors to the Kane County Hospital in Kanab.
Officials of the Immigration and Naturalization Service were called in to interpret for the survivors. The area is 260 miles south of Salt Lake City.
