San Carlos, CA, officials are seeking motorists to help limit speeders inside city limits, according to a published report.
Police are asking volunteers to sign an agreement promising to obey all rules of the road - including speed limits and pedestrian rights-of-way - and then slap a "Neighborhood Pace Car" sticker on their vehicles.
As do-gooders drive around town on their daily business, they will be responsible for keeping would-be speeders and other scofflaws in check.
"If they're driving the speed limit, everyone behind them is driving the speed limit," Sgt. Glenn Glasgow, who started the project Wednesday, told the San Mateo County Times.
The idea originated in Boise, ID, Glasgow said, and is being tried in Palo Alto, CA, Santa Cruz, CA, Salt Lake City, Atlanta and other cities.
Glasgow said the police were not encouraging volunteers to take the law into their own hands.
"We're not asking them to chase down speeders," he said. "We're asking them to be the best witnesses they can be, in the event of a reckless vehicle or other accident. They can call us up on their cell phones."
