The National Commission Against Drunk Driving honored the state of Indiana Dec. 5 for its leadership in the fight against alcohol-impaired driving and underage drinking.
The state was recognized for having the most comprehensive impaired driving prevention program in the nation and for being a national model. Gov. Frank O'Bannon's Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving coordinates a comprehensive statewide program that addresses enforcement, education and legislation needs.
In 2001, Indiana recorded 909 fatalities. As of Nov. 15, 2002, Indiana reported 151 fewer fatalities than during the same time last year.
