Huge marijuana cache seized at Laredo bridge

U.S. customs inspectors and canine enforcement officers seized a marijuana load valued at $6.4 million Dec. 2 at the Laredo, TX, World Trade Bridge. This is one of the largest marijuana seizures ever at the bridge, second only to a 6,580-pound load seized in September 2001, U.S. customs officials said.

A U.S. customs inspector referred a 1989 International tractor hauling a manifested shipment of brake master cylinders and switchboards for a secondary examination.

During the secondary examination, an inspector opened the rear door and noticed numerous wrapped bundles throughout the trailer that were inconsistent with the manifested merchandise. U.S. customs canine "Hyatt" alerted his human partner to the odor of marijuana. Upon further examination, U.S. customs inspectors removed a total of 356 bundles carrying a total of 6,428 pounds of marijuana.

The marijuana has an estimated street value of $6.4 million. No arrests were made, but the investigation is continuing, customs officials said.
