Connecticut may look at higher rush-hour tolls

Connecticut may try out a new type of toll that would charge drivers more to use highways during rush hour, the New Haven Register reported Dec. 4.

The paper said the Connecticut Transportation Strategy Board might recommend a study regarding higher rush-hour tolls - which are designed to reduce congestion - on I-95 between Greenwich and New Haven; I-91 between New Haven and Hartford; Connecticut Route 15 from Greenwich to Stratford; and I-84 from Danbury to Manchester.

Chairman R. Nelson "Oz" Griebel declined to discuss details of the proposal because the full board had not yet discussed it, the paper said. The board will talk about the proposed study at its meeting next week.

The study could cost $500,000 to $1 million and be due by March 31, 2004.

The Transportation Strategy Board was set up in 2001 to study ways to address traffic congestion. The toll plan is one of 23 ideas being considered to raise money for transportation improvements.

The state ended tolls on I-95 in response to a fatality accident in Stratford in 1982.
