DNA deepens mystery of trucker's 1978 death

The remains once believed to be those of a Florida trucker killed in a Missouri traffic accident more than 24 years ago will soon undergo study to determine who was buried in John L. Scott's grave, The Associated Press reported.

The body was exhumed in February after Scott's family reportedly received two mysterious phone calls from the same man claiming the 48-year-old Scott was not killed in the accident and was still alive. DNA tests then showed that there was almost no chance the body was Scott's.

The fatal crash occurred Oct. 6, 1978, on I-44 near Lebanon, MO, when a tractor-trailer thought to be driven by Scott plowed into the back of an oil truck.

The badly mangled body was identified as Scott's by the Missouri Highway Patrol and the Laclede County, MO, coroner through a driver's license found on the victim.

The Orange County, FL, Medical Examiner's Office will examine the remains, AP reported. It could take several months or more for a full investigation.
