According to figures released by the Energy Department Dec. 2, the national average cost of diesel is $1.407 per gallon. The price is up slightly from last week, when diesel was $1.405.

The lowest price nationally is in the Gulf Coast region. Diesel there costs $1.347 per gallon on average, up from $1.34 last week. The highest average price is in California. Fuel there is $1.509 per gallon, down from $1.512.

The remaining regions' prices per gallon are as follows: East Coast, $1.402; New England, $1.495; Central Atlantic, $1.489; Lower Atlantic, $1.357; Midwest, $1.41; Rocky Mountain, $1.452; and West Coast, $1.487.

The Department of Energy reports the average price of self-serve fuel each week. Prices are based on a survey of 350 diesel service centers nationwide and include taxes.
