Officials trying to decide who gets sniper reward

Washington, DC, area authorities are wondering who should get the $500,000 reward that was offered for information leading to the arrest of the DC snipers, The Associated Press reported.

John Muhammad, 41, and John Lee Malvo, 17, are charged with murder in Maryland and Virginia in the attacks, which left 10 people dead and three others wounded. The two are awaiting trial in Virginia.

Truckdriver Ron Lantz of Ludlow, KY, helped police capture the suspects after hearing a report on the Truckin' Bozo radio program, which described the car sought by police. He and another truckdriver blocked the exits to a rest stop in Maryland with their vehicles, trapping the suspects inside and enabling police to make an arrest.

However, Lantz isn't the only person with a claim on the reward, The AP reported. The sniper task force is sorting through about 60,000 tips that were received during the search. In addition, Whitney Donahue, of Greencastle, PA, has also been credited with tipping police to the snipers' location as they slept at the rest stop. Police have said Donahue was likely the first caller.

More than 900 contributors donated the $580,244.77 in the reward fund. Of that, $500,000 will be given out as a reward, while the rest will go to victims of the shootings and their families. Lantz initially said if he received any reward money, he would donate most of it to the victims and their families.
