Kenworth, Navistar announce layoffs

Kenworth Truck Company issued layoff warnings this week to 268 workers at its Renton, WA, plant, saying the workers would lose their jobs over a 14-day period beginning Nov. 1, according to press reports.

A spokesman for Kenworth's parent company, Bellevue, WA-based Paccar Inc., said the layoff notices were sent in anticipation of a drop-off in orders for new heavy-duty trucks after Oct. 1.

Meanwhile, Navistar International Corp. said Aug. 27 that operating company International Truck and Engine Corp. would lay off about 1,100 employees, mostly in September.

The closing of the company's production line at the Springfield, OH, plant will idle 750 to 800 workers, a company official said.
