Bush eyes Western U.S. for oil drilling potential

The Bush administration wants to streamline the permit and leasing process to drill for oil in the Rocky Mountains and other locations across the West.

The House energy bill passed last year contains a provision to make drilling easier and faster. This provision, along with the possibility of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, will have to be reconciled with the Senate's energy bill.

Meanwhile, a White House task force is seeking comments from industry on future drilling sites. And the Bureau of Land Management is considering dozens of projects across the West. Opposition is expected from various environmental groups.
