This week, Hawaii Gov. Ben Cayetano halted the use of van-mounted cameras on state roads that photographed a speeder's license plate, resulting in a ticket by mail, AP reported.

Drivers mockingly called the vehicles "talivans" and civil liberties lawyers said the system unfairly assumed owners were behind the wheel. Lawyers also said the system was an invasion of privacy.

While many states use cameras to catch people running red lights, Hawaii was the first state to pass a law allowing photo-enforced radar along state highways. The van-mounted cameras were introduced on Oahu two months ago.
