FMCSA to allow some insulin-treated truckers to drive

A recent government report recommends allowing some insulin-treated diabetics to driver commercial vehicles. The report is based on findings from medical experts, insurance data and studies.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is proposing a case-by-case exemption process, which it says would not violate current federal law relating to waiver programs. The process includes: Identifying safe drivers who use insulin; guidelines for keeping medical supplies and measuring glucose levels; and establishing a process to monitor medical exams, administration of glucose tests and reporting procedures for severe cases of hypoglycemia and accidents.
