The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority plans to study noise levels along the length of the highway in an effort to determine where to build sound barriers, AP reports.

Authority Chairman Matthew Amorello told a group of about 100 area residents that traffic volume has increased. To pay for the study, money will be sought from the agency's budget.

Seven years ago, the Turnpike built about one mile of sound barriers in Newton and Natick at a cost of $2.25 million.

Residents complained of truck noise at night, and noise from idling trucks sending diesel fumes into their homes. They also complained about 70-foot McDonald's signs directing neon light into their bedrooms.
