Wyoming's state fuel tax would increase by as much as 5 cents per gallon under a proposal to cover the costs of a state Supreme Court order to improve school buildings. The tax, currently at 14 cents per gallon, is largely paid by out-of-state truckdrivers and tourists.

The tax increase would raise $32 million for the schools and about $48 million for the state's Transportation Department, which would go toward a 25-year highway improvement plan, according to the Casper Star-Tribune. The transportation money was requested by Gov. Jim Geringer.

The state's Select Committee on Capital Financing and Investment is expected to consider the plan in late October.
