The Maryland Department of Transportation is attempting to ease backups on Interstate 695 in southwestern Baltimore County by implementing a three-year project to widen the outer loop of the freeway. The project will add a lane to the overburdened freeway.
The work project will include widening and resurfacing nearly three miles of the outer loop from east of Frederick Road to I-95.
"This is one of the toughest sections of the Beltway we have," Parker F. Williams, head of the State Highway Administration, noted in a published report. "We're excited about getting the project started."
Work is scheduled for Sundays through Thursdays between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. to avoid peak-traffic periods. Throughout the construction period, ramps may be temporarily closed, the DOT said. The work includes lengthening and widening the one-mile acceleration ramp to I-95 South. Then the southbound ramp will be widened to two lanes.
Other changes include grading, resurfacing and drainage improvements and replacement of five bridges. The state is already setting up barricades for the $47.2 million project. The construction zone will affect night traffic immediately.
