International to increase output, recall workers

International Truck and Engine Corp. announced earlier this week it will boost production of Class 8 trucks and recall about 200 assembly workers. The company warned the production boost doesn't signal an end to the slump in truck demand and there is still a glut of good late model trucks.

Beginning Sept. 4, production at its Chatham, Ontario assembly plant is expected to jump from 43 units a day to 60. Roy Wiley, a company spokesperson, said the increase puts production at a level that more closely matches current retail demand. For the past year, "International has been producing below retail demand, which allowed dealer inventories to be reduced. The increase in output will help the company align dealer inventory with demand," he said.
