A Nebraska truckdriver and OOIDA member lost his life earlier this week while trying to help others. Ricky Gilmore, of Papillon, NE, was struck and killed by another motorist as he ran across a California freeway to help crash victims on the other side.
Gilmore was driving on Highway 99 near Turlock, CA, when he apparently witnessed a three-car accident in the opposite lanes. He stopped his rig on the right shoulder and began to run across the three-lane highway.
A car struck him as he made his way across the highway. The motorist's attention was reportedly diverted by the accident on the other side.
A drunken driver speeding through a construction zone caused the three-car accident, according to the Modesto Bee. None of the motorists involved in the accident were seriously injured.
