President Bush has announced that he will nominate Joseph M. Clapp to be the first permanent administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Sources say Clapp is expected to accept.
Clapp spent his career in the motor carrier segment of the transportation industry, retiring as chairman and CEO of Roadway Services Inc. in Akron, OH, in 1995. He is a former chairman of the Transportation Research Board and the Regular Common Carrier Conference, former vice-president-at-large of the American Trucking Associations, and former chairman of the ATA Foundation, Inc. He was also a member of the US Department of Transportation's National Motor Carrier Advisory Committee. He is currently a board member of the Eno Transporation Foundation in Washington, DC.
The White House announced Wednesday that the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee will conduct the confirmation hearing, yet unscheduled.
