On June 28, members of the Canamex Corridor Commission listened to a presentation by city officials from Nogales, AZ, and Santa Cruz County, along with data from the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas, Nogales branch. As a result of the meeting, several improvements to the present system were brought to the attention of the commission.
According to a report in The Packer (a newspaper for the produce industry), these improvements include:
a.. A third lane into the drug screening building during peak volume hours
a.. Extended hours at the port during peak season
a.. Long-term planning to move passenger processing to the west so that more
cargo truck lanes can be built
a.. Long-term planning for a new north-south highway to allow trucks to travel
to produce warehouses in Nogales faster
The presentation also included a request for the support of smart freight initiatives to help process trucks more quickly as they cross the border.
