Pennsylvania authorities seize truck hauling wheat in the same trailer used to move asbestos

A Pennsylvania truckdriver faces a fine and possible jail time for allegedly hauling wheat in the same trailer that was used to haul asbestos. During routine inspections earlier this month, it was discovered that Thomas Leiter of Lewistown had hauled asbestos from Portland, CT, to a recycling center in Youngstown, OH. He then allegedly picked up the wheat at McCullough Grain in Sharpsville, OH.

Leiter, a driver for Marbec Trucking Inc. in Spring Run, PA, faces a fine of up to $10,000, according to published reports. When stopped along Route 322 south of State College, he allegedly told inspectors from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the Pennsylvania State Police and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection that the wheat was for animal consumption. Investigators later learned that the mill he was delivering to, ConAgra in Martins Creek, PA, does not process wheat for animals. They called ahead to ConAgra, who refused the cargo.

Authorities could not say whether Leiter would face jail time, or if his company would face charges.
