Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, (R-CO) has his CDL and wants to give other American Indians the same chance. Campbell, the only American Indian in the Senate, has introduced a bill (S1344) that would provide grant money to Indian universities to train drivers.
Campbell still has his trucking license and drove the White House Christmas tree to Washington from Colorado last year in an 18-wheeler. "Based on my personal experience, the truck driving industry has something unique to offer Indian communities - a well-paying profession," he told the Congressional Quarterly. "The trucking industry is a thriving industry."
