Truckers driving through Indianapolis will soon be going airborne as they make their way around the city. "Flyovers" will replace tight-turn loop ramps that make trucks vulnerable to rollovers.
Flyover ramps, which soar up to 40 feet above road level, are designed to minimize gridlock at busy interchanges and keep tractor-trailers from having to maneuver on looped ramps. The new flyovers will allow drivers to maintain speed as they take the ramps up and over the highway, rather than slowing to about 25 mph to navigate a tight loop.
On the city's southeast side, the ramps will make it easier to merge back and forth between Interstate 74 and I-465, while a third flyover will connect northbound I-465 to Shadeland Avenue, the Indianapolis Star reported. A fourth ramp eventually will benefit the I-465 and I-70 interchange. The entire project should be complete by Nov. 1.About 750 heavy truck occupants are killed each year in rollovers nationwide, the newspaper reported.
