Freightliner has laid off 123 workers at its truck parts plant in Gastonia, NC. The company blamed the job cuts on continued slow sales of heavy trucks. The plant manufactures cab and chassis parts for Freightliner's assembly plants in Mount Holly and Cleveland, NC. Both plants recently cut production, reducing demand for parts produced in Gastonia.
"We regret this action is necessary," said Freightliner spokesman Chris Brandt, "but, this is one of the most difficult truck markets we've ever seen." The employees could be recalled if market conditions improve. The Portland, OR-based truck maker announced 1,120 job cuts in June.
