A truck driver was killed after being run over by his own tractor-trailer this week in Superior, Colo. Boulder County Sheriff’s Department said Juan Carlos Estrada, a 35-year-old man from Thornton, Colo., died on Thursday morning, Oct. 20.

Responding to a 911 call of a single-vehicle accident near the intersection of Highway 128 and Eldorado Boulevard around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, members of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Department discovered Estrada caught in the rear tires of his semi-truck.

Estrada was extricated from the truck’s rear tires and was transported to a Denver-area hospital by helicopter before being pronounced dead about 8 a.m. The entire extrication process took about an hour.

Authorities said they believe Estrada pulled off on the eastbound shoulder of Highway 128 to attend to something with the rear driver’s side tires of his semi-truck. According to a news release, the sheriff’s office said Estrada was between the tandem axles of the truck when it began to roll forward.

“The man became caught in the dual tires and tandem axles on the driver’s side and was drug approximately 250 feet until the semi-truck came to rest on its own,” the news release said. “It isn’t yet known why the truck rolled forward onto the man.”

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call 303-441-4444. The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of the victim’s death.
