A gold medalist has a strong connection to the trucking industry.

U.S. Olympic swimmer Ryan Murphy captured the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke with a new Olympic-record time of 51.97 seconds on Monday night, Aug.8. He is the son of Landstar Vice President and Treasurer Pat Murphy.

It was the first Olympic medal for the 21-year-old Ryan Murphy, who won NCAA championships for the University of California three years in a row.

He is scheduled to compete in the 200-meter backstroke semifinals at 9:28 p.m. EDT Wednesday.
