In Bristol, Tenn., a 44-year-old mother of two was shot and killed as she drove on the four-lane Volunteer Parkway early Thursday. Investigators are saying the shooter was motivated to act in response to police violence against blacks.

Police say she was hit during a random shooting spree in which three other people, including a police officer, were wounded.

The alleged shooter, 37-year-old Lakeem Scott, was reportedly armed with an assault rifle, a pistol and a large amount of ammunition. Scott was eventually wounded by police gunfire and taken into custody. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation revealed that the shooter was firing shots at the Days Inn and vehicles on the Volunteer Parkway.

On Friday, investigators formally identified the deceased as Jennifer Rooney, a newspaper delivery driver employed by the Bristol Herald Courier.
