OOIDA’s Mary Johnston Scholarship Advisory Committee meeting opened Thursday morning with a somber tone.

The meeting at OOIDA headquarters in Grain Valley, Mo., was the group’s first since Scholarship Committee Chairman William G. Rode died Feb. 1 at the age of 82. Rode, who spent nearly 40 years in the trucking industry, made the scholarship fund for OOIDA descendants and dependents one of his passions.

The committee opened the meeting with a moment of silence for Rode.

“These are big shoes to fill,” OOIDA President Jim Johnston said. “He was really dedicated to the scholarship.”

The committee unanimously voted to approve Lewie Pugh as chairman and Gary Carr as co-chairman.

The OOIDA Mary Johnston Scholarship Program has been assisting the children, grandchildren and legal dependents of OOIDA members in their efforts to gain a higher education since 1998. The students are selected in a blind evaluation conducted by the committee. Scholarship awards are transferred directly to the student’s selected institution and can be renewed for a total of four years. The funds can be used for tuition or any legitimate school-related expenses.

This year, the scholarship program will name one $2,000 winner, four $1,000 winners and one runner-up.
