The Great American Trucking Show in Dallas is on deck this week, and there are many things to see and do. The show will not only crown this year’s national Pride & Polish champion, but also feature plenty of exhibits, vendors, seminars and entertainment. In addition, truckers have an opportunity to comment on a proposal by federal agencies to regulate emissions and fuel economy for trucks.
GATS takes place Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 27-29, at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, 650 S. Griffin St., Dallas, Texas 75202.
All truck parking will be at Fair Park, 3013 S. Haskell Ave., Dallas, TX 75223, with shuttles running back and forth. Truck parking is free.
OOIDA Senior Member Jon Osburn and the Association’s tour truck, “The Spirit of the American Trucker,” will be located in the parking area at Fair Park.
Osburn says everything about the new parking location is trucker friendly.
“It’s all paved parking, safe and secure,” he said. “There will be food out there, mobile showers from TA Petro. We’ll have misters out there to beat the heat.”
Official show hours are noon to 5 p.m. on Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday followed by a concert by John Anderson at 5:30 p.m. in Ballroom D of the convention center; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Truckstop Ministries will host a worship service at 9:30 a.m., Sunday.
Inside the show, the Landstar Fit for the Road Wellness Pavilion will provide free health screenings, cooking tips and educational materials.
Osburn will be at the health pavilion on Saturday to speak about first aid and what to do if you’re the first one on the scene of an emergency.
Speaking of health, the GATS Fit for the Road 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for 7 a.m., Saturday, at Fair Park. Proceeds from the run/walk will go to the St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund.
A fundraising effort by the Trucking Solutions Group was successful in bringing a mobile mammogram unit to GATS this year for free mammograms. See related story by Editor-In-Chief Sandi Soendker about the effort.
GATS promises plenty of bling and dazzling trucks. Many of the top names in the show truck circuit have their sights set on the Pride & Polish championship.
Mack Trucks and Evel Knievel Enterprises will display a fully restored 1974 Mack FS786LST and trailer during the event. Evel Knievel used this truck and trailer as his personal equipment hauler and dressing room during many of his legendary stunts.
Education and seminars are always a big part of the GATS experience. A comprehensive list of happenings, events and seminars can be found at truckshow.com.
During a special session this year, the Environmental Protection Agency and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will be on hand at OOIDA’s urging to hear from truckers on a proposed regulation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost fuel economy for heavy trucks. OOIDA has more information on this session and how to comment on the FightingForTruckers.com website.
The session with EPA and NHTSA happens from 2 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 27, in room C-151 of the convention center. A public comment period on the proposal remains open through Sept. 17 at regulations.gov.
