Michigan police seek woman accused of robbing sleeping truckers

Michigan authorities are alerting truckers to lock their doors when they park or sleep at truck stops because of a string of cab burglaries.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department says that, since July, at least 12 truckers have been robbed of cash and credit cards while the drivers were sleeping in their cabs at truck stops in Scio Township, just outside of Ann Arbor. The incidents have occurred in the parking lots of a TravelCenters of America truck stop and the Pilot Travel Center off Baker Road.

The sheriff’s department says an unidentified black female, believed to be in her 40s, is the suspect.

Sheriff’s department spokesman Derrick Jackson said the suspect has only taken cash and credit cards so far. He also said there have been no signs of forced entry to the cabs.

“Several (drivers) have said that they always lock their doors but were unsure if they had forgotten on this particular night,” Jackson said in an email to Land Line. “All were asleep.”

Jackson said the department is also “looking into the possibility” of all the vehicles being the same make or model.

Local TV news station WXYZ ABC-7 in Detroit broadcast a still image of the woman believed to be the primary suspect earlier this week.

Jackson said truckers who are parking in the area should look out for one another, try to park in well-lit areas and report any suspicious activity.

“If you see something, say something is what we say,” he said. “If it’s suspicious then call the local police and have someone come check it out.”
