Illiana Expressway project gets federal approval

| Thursday, December 11, 2014

Highway planners in Illinois and Indiana received federal approval of the proposed Illiana Expressway project on Thursday, Dec. 11.

The plan calls for a 50-mile-long, east-west toll road that would connect Interstate 55 in Illinois with I-65 in Indiana, allowing traffic to bypass the southern outskirts of Chicago.

The highway has drawn opposition from landowners, environmentalists, the city of Chicago and The Chicago Tribune, which had editorialized: “Tell us again why this is a good idea?”
