OOIDA members strut their stuff at PDI Pride & Polish and Dyno Event

Horsepower is sexy. Guys with big horsepower like to talk about it: “I’m putting out around 800 to the ground and need to tweak it a little.” The folks at Performance Diesel Inc. in St George, Utah, love to take the opportunity to thank their customers and celebrate big trucks. On Oct. 17-18, they hosted the last Pride & Polish truck beauty contest of 2014 along with a Customer Appreciation Dyno Event.

Bringing home five first-place trophies and Best of Show – Working Bobtail, OOIDA Member Kenneth Fisher and his wife, Barb, of Muscoda, Wis., were surprised and delighted.

Best Of Show – Working Bobtail went to OOIDA Member Kenneth Fisher of Muscoda, Wis., and his 1997 mocha pearl and green Peterbilt 379.

OOIDA Member Billy Rethwisch of Tomah, Wis., to Best of Show – Working Combo with his 2013 green and white Peterbilt 389 and2013 Polar tanker named “Blood, Sweat and Gas.”

“It was not something I was expecting,” said Kenneth. “We worked really hard cleaning and polishing the truck. We even waxed the motor, but there were so many great trucks here that I didn’t expect to do this well.”

The Fishers pull a flatbed leased to Mercer; hauling anything that will fit on the deck. Their tractor, a 1997 mocha and green flamed Peterbilt 379, has more than 1.8 million miles on it.

“We went to a small show in 2002 and didn’t do as well as we hoped,” explained Kenneth. “So we went home; my wife sold a car and dumped the money into the truck.” Little by little the truck has evolved into the award-winning ride they run today.

“Three years ago someone tore off my front end and that gave us the opportunity to really redo a lot, from the hood to a fresh paint job and more. It’s always a work in progress,” he said.

Their Caterpillar 3406 is rated for 550 horsepower, but is putting 591 hp to the ground and gets 6.5-7.5 mpg depending on the weather.

Best of Show – Working Combo was awarded to OOIDA Member Billy Rethwisch of Tomah, Wis., and his 2013 green and white Peterbilt 389 pulling a painted-to-match 2013 Polar tanker. Rethwisch has been unstoppable for the last couple of years; taking home Best of Show trophies from coast to coast. He’s looking for a repeat National Championship in 2015.

He’s also got big plans for the future.

“I’m going to do a few shows in 2015,” Rethwisch said. “But I’ve also got plans to build a big new shop. And when I’m done, I’ve got a 1986 Freightliner cabover with an 86-inch bunk that I’m going to completely redo top to bottom – all in my own shop. Everything from fabricating parts to paint will be done by me and my guys all under one roof. And when it’s done, I think it will stand very tall in its class.”

That truck is currently working just about every day, hauling gas. Stay tuned.

Best of Show – Limited Mileage Bobtail and three additional first place trophies were awarded to Travis Poulsen of Logan, Utah, with his 1998 gray and black Peterbilt 379. The judges were unable to find flaws on this truck, immaculately detailed from top to bottom. Look for it at upcoming shows in 2015.

OOIDA Member Josh Skidmore, Todd Henry and Jim Henry of Brigham City, Utah, keep coming back and stepping up their game. Two years ago, Skidmore was awarded a National Championship in Working Bobtail. Now, that same 2007 white and yellow Peterbilt 379 is hooked to a 2013 Western Elite step-deck trailer, and he’s competing in Limited Mileage – Combo. It’s tougher than just adding a trailer to the competition. But they stood out again, bringing home Best of Show honors.

These four Pride & Polish competitors have now qualified for the National Championship competition which will be held in Dallas, Texas, at the Great American Truck Show next August.

Below is the complete list of winners.
