The Jones Loop Road rest area off of Exit 161 on I-75 in Charlotte County will close in January 2015, according to a Florida Department of Transportation news release.
FDOT has plans to demolish the building and may lease or sell the property. The closure is due to low use over the years and private businesses providing services needed for travelers and professional drivers. An urbanized area is near Jones Loop Road on I-75.
“Our evaluation indicated, on average, about 750 vehicles a day stopped at the Jones Loop rest area in 2012. That’s under 3 percent of our average daily interstate traffic in this vicinity,” said FDOT District Secretary Billy Hattaway in the news release.
FDOT noted that the closure will be a relief for taxpayers and will support the local economy. Signs advising of the closure will be posted in mid-December.
