After much needed renovations, the Salt River Canyon rest area along U.S. 60 in Arizona has reopened, according to an Arizona Department of Transportation news release.
Closed for several years due to a lack of funding, the rest area has been equipped with restroom building upgrades, replacement of the composting toilet system, water well work and solar panels to power the facility.
ADOT rolled out a $17.4 million rest area rehabilitation project back in 2011. Infrastructure Corporation of America, a private company hired by ADOT through a public-private partnership, will maintain the rest area.
Arizona has a total of 34 rest areas: 16 ADOT owned, 13 non-ADOT owned, 1 ADOT and National Park Service joint ownership, and 4 that are not in service. Visit www.azdot.gov/maps for a map of Arizona rest areas.
