Half price trucks? Port of Houston introduces Texas-sized grants

Maybe the name isn’t creative, but does that matter if you can obtain a truck for anywhere near half of its retail value?

The Houston-Galveston Area Council will host a “Drayage Truck Event” from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1. The event will include informational sessions to show grants and loans available to help truck owners replace older, dirtier trucks with new ones.

An announcement of Saturday’s truck event was distributed by the Environmental Defense Fund, an environmental organization that partnered with the Houston-Galveston Area Council on previous efforts to replace older drayage trucks at Houston’s port. The port’s Drayage Loan Program already has helped pay for more than 200 replacement drayage trucks.

“The upcoming drayage truck event is an excellent opportunity to buy a new truck at a deep discount and help Houston get closer to taking a deep collective breath of healthy air,” the Environmental Defense Fund announcement said.

An estimated 3,000 trucks regularly make calls at the Port of Houston. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, Houston has the sixth-highest amount of ozone pollution in the country.

The event will be held at the port’s Executive Building Parking lot, located at 111 East Loop North in Houston.
