The National Truck Driving Championships continued Wednesday, Aug. 13, in Pittsburgh, Pa. This year 11 women – more than ever before – are among the more than 400 truckers competing in the championships.
One of the women is Ina Daly, an OOIDA member from Avondale, Ariz., who won a category last year. Reed Black, news anchor of “Land Line Now,” spoke to Ina on Wednesday right before she competed and asked her about winning the tanker competition last year.
“I’m the first woman to win, so I’m hoping to have an influence on other women, encouraging them to enter their state competitions,” Ina said.
How tough is the competition?
“Very,” Ina said. “There’s a lot of really, really good drivers – both at state and national level.”
Daly, who drives for Con-way Freight, says that she had to switch to flatbed this year because she won the tanker competition last year. She also says the competitors are assigned a tractor, which they may or may not be familiar with.
The National Truck Driving Championships are sponsored by the American Trucking Associations.
