Deer smashes through trucker's windshield

A state trooper in Washington state says a trucker did all the right things on Monday when a deer smashed through his windshield. It happened on northbound Interstate 5 in Tacoma.

Trooper Guy Gill says the deer crossed four southbound lanes, leapt over a Jersey barrier, hit the front of the truck and smashed sideways through the windshield and into the cab. But Gill says the trucker didn’t swerve or slam on the brakes – and managed to get the truck safely off the highway.

“He had the wherewithal, and he stayed calm in a situation like that. He was able to safely get the vehicle pulled over to the right shoulder and stop. This whole time, no windshield and a deer basically wrapped around the steering column and in his lap,” Gill explained.

“Glass shards everywhere. He had some cuts and abrasions on his face, hands and arms, but he got the truck pulled over to the shoulder and stopped safely. He did an amazing job.”

Trooper Gill says the trucker declined a tow truck – then slipped on his sunglasses and drove to the next exit to make arrangements to transfer his load to another truck.

“He was a rock star,” Gill said.
