OOIDA members hot on the lot at 75 Chrome Shop Truck Show

By Suzanne Stempinski, Land Line contributing field editor | Thursday, May 01, 2014

The gleam of freshly shined truck bling; the smiles on the faces of children; stilt walkers; music; the irresistible aromas of hot wax and barbecue – it was the 16th Annual 75 Chrome Shop Truck Show and Pride & Polish Truck Beauty Contest in Wildwood, Fla.

Boasting a record-setting number of trucks, the show had crowds so big they literally shut down neighboring truck stops as eager friends, family and fans of the trucking industry came to celebrate.

Whoever thinks these trucks don’t work hasn’t met OOIDA Senior Members Bob and Shelley Brinker from Grayling, Ohio. Their not-to-be-missed 2000 Freightliner Classic XL is the stuff of legend. A celebration of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, you could easily believe that steel rails are made of wood and the engine is a treasure chest. You’ll shiver your timbers as you walk on planks hand-selected by Brinker for the flooring inside the tractor. And he’s logged more than 1.4 million miles running flatbed freight. The judges decreed “Aye, Aye Captain” and awarded the Brinkers six trophies including Best of Show – Working Bobtail.

OOIDA Member Billy Rethwisch of Tomah, Wis., is on top of the world. He’s been knocking wins out of the parking lot since his first truck show at Shell Super Rigs last year. This year he brought out a spectacular new truck – a 2013 green and white Peterbilt 389, pulling a 2013 Polar gas tanker. The paint scheme is eye candy, the finish immaculate. He spends a lot of time on the road and when he’s not behind the wheel of his truck, someone else is. Trucks don’t make any money when they’re parked. Rethwisch earned Best of Show – Working Combo, along with five other trophies. His son Luke celebrated his seventh birthday at the show and earned a trophy as the Best Truck Detailer on the lot. He’s part of the next generation of truck drivers and a great young representative.

You don’t have to be from Wisconsin to drive a smokin’ hot truck, but apparently it doesn’t hurt. Just ask OOIDA Life Member Joel Dawes. The Waterford, Wis., native brought his 1988 white and green Peterbilt 379 to compete in the Limited Mileage division. With some help from his son, AJ, Dawes cleaned and polished until rags down was called. The judges appreciated his efforts and awarded him Best of Show – Limited Mileage Bobtail.

Good-looking trucks are more than a hobby for OOIDA Member Vinnie Diorio. He owns them, drives them, puts drivers in them and provides exceptional customer service with them. Based out of Richfield, Wis.; his fleet of company and owner-operator trucks have a distinctive clean and lean styling that makes them stand out wherever they are. Best of Show – Limited Mileage Combo and four top trophies went to his 2013 orange and purple Peterbilt 389 pulling a MAC curtainside trailer.

And, because that’s how he rolls, Diorio’s driver Kevin “Biggs” Pascavis took home Best of Show – Wash & Show Combo with his 2013 blue and orange Peterbilt 389 and 2010 MAC curtainside.

Best Wash & Show Bobtail honors went, for the second consecutive year to Drey Ellzey of Seminary, Miss., with his 1997 purple Kenworth W900L.

People’s Choice, voted by participants and attendees, went to Armando Garcia of Opa Locka, Fla., with his 1997 black Peterbilt 379. A truck builder, Garcia showed off some serious skills with a locomotive-styled front end, gull-wing doors on the front and suicide sleeper doors. This truck named “Danger” has style and more.

The next stop on the road to the 2014 Pride & Polish Championship is a brand-new show in La Crosse, Wis., at River States Customz June 27-28. For more information, go to www.prideandpolish.com.
