The Truckers for a Cause chapter of A.W.A.K.E. – Alert Well and Keeping Energetic – will conduct an educational conference call next week about oral appliances for the treatment of sleep apnea.
Oral appliances are medical devices that use a mouthpiece. According to a Truckers for a Cause A.W.A.K.E. press release, the mouthpiece opens the airways while sleeping by jutting the jaw forward.
The A.W.A.K.E. chapter notes that the FMCSA Medical Review Board does not certify drivers who use oral appliances. After A.W.A.K.E. held an educational conference call about oral appliances with a former member of the Medical Review Board, a company devised a compliance monitoring chip that can be implanted into some oral appliances. A.W.A.K.E. mentions that the Sleep Apnea in Transportation bill passed by Congress last October directs FMCSA to “review alternative treatments.”
Dr. Tara Griffin, a dental sleep medicine specialist, will be the speaker in the upcoming conference call. In addition to specializing in the treatment of sleep apnea using oral appliances, Dr. Griffin has also been active with several trucking associations.
The free conference call will take place on Monday, April 28, 2014, at 7 p.m. Central Time. To participate, call 209-647-1600 and use the code 128704.
