Over 18,000 trucks recalled from three separate companies

| Monday, March 31, 2014

More than 18,000 trucks manufactured by Mack, Navistar, and Caterpillar are being recalled for possible fire risks or brake problems.

The Mack recall affects models CHU, CXU, GU, and TD for the years 2010-2012. More specifically, those models that were manufactured June 16, 2009, through July 18, 2011 have been recalled. In those vehicles, the Electronic Power Distribution Model (EPDM) may be contaminated from water leaks in, and around, the windshield. Contaminants such as road salts could reach the EPDM if a water leak were to occur. As a result, circuits could possibly be bridged, create a high-resistance short, and potentially cause a fire.

Owners will be notified by Mack so dealers can inspect the EPDM. Any repairs will be paid by Mack. Owners may contact Mack Trucks at 336-393-2000. Mack's number for this recall is SC0375. Recalls will begin in late April and could potentially affect 16,428 trucks.

Navistar is recalling the 2012-2013 models of International LoneStar, PayStar, ProStar, WorkStar and 9900 trucks, which are equipped with the Reduced Stopping Distance brake linings feature code 0504501, 0504504, 04EWM. The recall also affects those models with or without the feature code 04WCS Greased For Life front air S-cam brakes.

S-cam brackets on steer axles in the affected Navistar trucks may fracture on the affected wheel. A fracture in the S-cam bracket can result in the truck pulling to one side during braking. An increase in stopping distance may also be experienced. Brake chatter usually precedes an S-cam bracket failure.

Navistar will notify owners so dealers can replace the S-cam brake assemblies free of charge. Owners may contact Navistar at 331-332-1590. Navistar’s number for this recall is 14501. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 13V231. Recalls will begin on April 21, 2014, and potentially affect 1,196 trucks.

Caterpillar is recalling all 2012-2013 CT660 trucks manufactured from August 2011 through August 2012 that are equipped with feature code 0504501, 0504504, or 04EWM Reduced Stopping Distance (RSD) brake linings and with or without feature code 04WCS Greased For Life front air S-cam brakes.

Affected Caterpillar trucks are being recalled for the same issues as Navistar mentioned above. Caterpillar will notify all owners so dealers can replace the S-cam brake assemblies free of charge.

Owners can contact Caterpillar at 888-614-4328 and will be notified by letter before the end of April 2014. A letter will also be sent notifying owners when parts are available. Caterpillar notes that 181 trucks are affected.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY 800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
