OOIDA went into the seventh annual Truckers for Troops telethon Dec. 9-13 with the goal to push the total amount of money raised for the troops to more than $400,000 since the telethon was first hatched. Before the 2013 campaign, the total amount raised was more than $360,000. This week, OOIDA Public Relations Director Norita Taylor announced that the 2013 numbers pushed Truckers for Troops to its goal.
“The numbers are in,” says Taylor, “and the grand total, which includes a generous $5,000 from Shell, came in at $46,861, allowing us to exceed our goal of a grand total of $400,000 in seven years. Many thanks go out to our members and other supporters for making this happen.”
During Truckers for Troops week, a broadcast is planned for each day on OOIDA’s Land Line Now satellite radio show on Sirius XM 128. During that week, truckers can join OOIDA or renew their membership for $25, with 10 percent of that money going toward care packages for U.S. troops stationed in combat areas overseas. OOIDA matches the 10 percent dollar for dollar.
The $20 discount on memberships will remain in force through Jan. 31. However, the 10 percent donation to troops and the match only applied during the telethon week.
Taylor said, to date, the Association has sent more than 2,500 large care packages and served up items to nearly 30,000 military personal stationed in war zones.
“We’re still soliciting hand-made cards and letters from kids to be sent in the care packages. These are among the most popular items,” said Taylor. “Also, truckers are encouraged to write letters we can send to our military personnel.”
The cards and letters can be sent to Norita Taylor at OOIDA. Taylor reminds everyone that packages don’t go out until after the first of the year so holiday themes are not necessary. “Plus, it’s best to not include personal information like addresses and telephone numbers,” she adds, “just the first name of the sender or name of the organization.”
OOIDA is also asking for the names and address of troops serving in active combat zones we can send packages to. Call the name and address in to Nikki Johnson at OOIDA at 816-229-5791. You can also e-mail her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Those zones include Afghanistan, the Kosovo area of Yugoslavia, and the Arabian Peninsula Areas, which includes the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, part of the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and the countries of Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The care packages will start going out in January 2014 with more mailings after that. By the time they’re all shipped, more than 5,000 U.S. troops will enjoy things from home, thanks to OOIDA members and other supporters.
