A man in his mid-60s died Tuesday after smashing his pickup into a parked semi at the Matfield Green Service Area along the Kansas Turnpike, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The man, whose identity was still not available on Wednesday pending notification of next of kin, was reportedly traveling at highway speeds when he entered the northbound service area, according to a KHP official. The driver of the semi was not injured in the crash.

According to the KHP, the Butler County (Kan.) Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call from a passerby at 8:59 p.m. Tuesday. The department then notified the Kansas Turnpike Authority.

The deceased victim was driving a 2002 Chevrolet pickup, which collided with a parked 2012 Freightliner. Highway speed on the turnpike is 75 mph.

The patrol is still investigating the cause of the crash.
