Authorities are still trying to determine what caused a trailer to disconnect from a tractor on a busy interstate Tuesday afternoon.

One New Jersey man died as a result of a collision with the detached trailer, according to information from the New Jersey State Patrol.

The crash occurred at 1:58 p.m. on Dec. 3, in the westbound lanes of I-280 at mile post 1.9, just before the exit to Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, according to Sgt. Michael Stepian.

Stepian said the trailer was empty, but he was not able to release further details about the crash, which remains under investigation.

According to news reports on the website www.nj.com, an amalgamation of newspaper reports from around the state, the victim was 51-year-old Steven Peltz, of Mount Olive. Peltz was driving an unspecified Honda passenger vehicle when he collided with the detached trailer.

Craig Wallenstein, the driver of the 2007 Western Star tractor with a lowboy trailer, was not injured in the crash, according to reports.
