OOIDA Member Randy Boswell, a driver for Southern Refrigerated Transport, has been named the Darrell Hicks Memorial Ambassador of the Year by Trucker Buddy International.

Boswell, of Lumberton, NC, has been an active Trucker Buddy for more than seven years and a member of the Ambassador program for almost five years. In a phone interview with “Land Line Now,”he said the most satisfying aspect of being a Trucker Buddy is the relationship he has formed with a group of special-needs students at a school in Markesan, WI.

“I go out of my way to call them once a week. I send pictures and postcards and they send letters,” he said. “They send get well cards, birthday cards. They sent a birthday card to my mom.”

Founded in 1992, Trucker Buddy International is a nonprofit organization that helps educate and mentor schoolchildren via a pen pal relationship between students and truckers.

Named for the late Darrell Hicks, a long-time Trucker Buddy, Ambassador and OOIDA life member, the award is bestowed upon select individuals who help recruit other drivers to the program, and who volunteer to help promote Trucker Buddy. Ambassadors are veteran Trucker Buddies who spend additional time volunteering to work trade show booths, recruiting drivers at truck stops, and offering meaningful suggestions to help improve the program.

“Without the help of Ambassadors like Randy, we simply could not fulfill our mission to improve the image of drivers and encourage over 60,000 students to excel in school each year,” Trucker Buddy Executive Director Randy Schwartzenburg said in a press release. “And it's important to note the generous assistance of motor carriers like Southern Refrigerated which route the ambassadors to the shows – they’re such valuable partners in our efforts.”
