Missouri has officially converted the U.S. Highway 71 into Interstate 49. The Missouri Department of Transportation said crews worked all day Thursday to uncover the signage, which has been posted for months.

Designating the180-mile stretch of road from I-435 in Kansas City, MO, to Route H in Pineville, as interstate was first ordered by Congress in 1991.

It will be at least a few years before the whole I-49 corridor from Lafayette, LA, to Kansas City will be finished. Louisiana hopes to finish a segment that links with Arkansas next summer. Arkansas, however, isn’t sure when it will complete the segment that will link with southern Missouri.

Arkansas voters approved a sales tax increase in November to pay for highways, and part of that money will go to I-49.
