Truckers for Troops, OOIDA’s annual campaign that raises money to fund gift boxes to service men and women overseas in combat zones, will air its final telethon of the week Friday night.
All week long, “Land Line Now” on Sirius XM’s channel 106, has aired all kinds of stories about veterans, active members of the service and military service dogs. Host Mark Reddig and his crew have shared letters from troops to OOIDA thanking truckers for the gift boxes in previous years and have passed along all the heartfelt stories they’ve heard throughout the week as truckers have called in to participate in the campaign.
On Friday, among many other stories, you’ll hear about some kids in Grain Valley, MO, who share OOIDA’s reverence for those who serve in our nation’s military and whose original performances prove the next generation has inherited a deep respect and appreciation for our armed forces. Land Line Managing Editor Jami Jones will tell you about the Grain Valley High School’s Marching Eagles and how their moving tribute to our veterans earned them a trip to Pearl Harbor next Thanksgiving.
The weekend shows will highlight some of the most popular segments from the week, so if you missed out you can catch up over the weekend.
The campaign runs Dec. 3-7, and during the week of the event OOIDA will offer new and renewal memberships for $25 – a savings of $20 off regular dues. Ten percent of member dues paid during the campaign will go toward care packages. OOIDA will then match those funds. The discounted memberships will continue through Jan. 31.
Tuesday, some callers were surprised to be chatting with OOIDA President Jim Johnston. Wednesday, Rod Nofziger, OOIDA’s chief of staff, hopped on the phones to chat with members who were calling in to renew and join during Truckers for Troops. Friday, OOIDA Executive Vice President Todd Spencer will be on the phones.
The campaign has already received a head start with a donation from Shell Rotella for $5,000.
The first five Truckers for Troops campaigns have raised more than $303,000 for care packages.
To participate in Truckers for Troops, you can call 800-444-5791 during regular business hours and during the evening broadcast of “Land Line Now.” If you call after business hours, press 1 and leave a voicemail and someone in membership will call you back. All messages left on Saturday and Sunday and before the open of business on Monday will be included in the campaign’s total.
