Truckers for Troops: 'This is Jim Johnston, can I help you?'

| Tuesday, December 04, 2012

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, OOIDA’s Sixth Annual Truckers for Troops campaign wrapped up the second day of its week-long radio series, which can be heard every day this week on “Land Line Now” on Sirius XM. At OOIDA headquarters in Grain Valley, that campaign made phone lines explode.

One of the voices on the other end of the line was OOIDA President and CEO Jim Johnston, who was manning the phones Tuesday afternoon in the Membership Department. It was a voice that surprised some callers, several of whom wondered if they had been connected to the right department. One asked how long Jim had been in the trucking business. Another asked if Jim had personally donated to the annual campaign (actually, he had and was one of the first).

The campaign runs Dec. 3-7, and during the week of the event OOIDA will offer new and renewal memberships for $25 – a savings of $20 off regular dues. Ten percent of member dues paid during the campaign will go toward care packages. OOIDA will then match those funds. The discounted memberships will continue through Dec. 31.

The radio show can be heard each day 7-8 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 12 a.m. Eastern on Sirius XM, the Road Dog Channel. Each day, Host Mark Reddig and the staff have special features and interviews planned for the week, including special letters from troops overseas who have been recipients of the care packages.

As part of the campaign, OOIDA is putting out a request for cards and letters to include in care packages for military personnel stationed in combat areas overseas.

“We always include a variety of good things in the packages, but the cards and letters are the most popular among the recipients who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said OOIDA Media Spokesperson Norita Taylor.

Send cards and letters to OOIDA headquarters, attention Truckers for Troops, P.O. Box 1000, Grain Valley, MO 64029. Towns or school names can be included, but please do not include last names or other personal information.

The campaign has already received a head start with a donation from Shell Rotella for $5,000.

The first five Truckers for Troops campaigns have raised more than $303,000 for care packages.

To participate in Truckers for Troops, you can call 800-444-5791 during regular business hours and during the evening broadcast of “Land Line Now.” If you call after business hours, press 1 and leave a voicemail and someone in membership will call you back.
