Snow causes 120-mile traffic jam in Russia

A heavy snow northwest of Moscow created a traffic mess that jammed up about 120 miles of road, Reuters reported Sunday.

Some of the thousands of vehicles had been stuck more than two days on the M-10 highway, which links Moscow with St. Petersburg, more than 400 miles to the northwest. One man was reported as saying it had been 24 hours and he had traveled less than a mile.

Police in the Tver region reported field kitchens were operating on the road. Many drivers complained supplies never reached them, and they were running out of fuel to keep their engines running and heat on in the subzero temperatures, according to Reuters.
