The business side of the business on OOIDA's next webinar

Paperwork, taxes, employees… There is so much more to your trucking business than hauling freight.

Your home and sometimes your truck serve as your office. Are you running it to maximum efficiency?

What documents are you required to keep? And for how long? Is there anything you don’t want at your business location?

OOIDA’s next webinar tackles these questions and also covers some tax basics. You’ll learn what you must file and when, as well as how to estimate taxes and the criteria for an employee versus an independent contractor.

The live broadcast takes place on Thursday, Dec. 6, or you can view it in the archive after the broadcast at your convenience.

There will be time after the live broadcast for questions and answers.

OOIDA Member Greg Gerhart of Jonesborough, TN, has been running under his own authority since April 2012.

The new entrant safety audit was making him a little nervous. So he signed up for the safety audit webinar in OOIDA’s Business Education Series.

He admits he is technologically challenged, and even his phone has him flummoxed sometimes. The webinar, though, was no problem.

“Like everything with OOIDA, it was very professional, very easy, simple. It was explained well,” Greg said.

He isn’t the only one who was impressed with the information he received. The head of FMCSA’s Tennessee field office conducted Greg’s audit. She told him he was the most prepared interview she had ever done.

Greg said the webinar “totally prepared me.”

“I was nervous about it, but we ended up having a great time, and I was impressed with what it did for me.”

Since he is on his own now with a one-man/one-truck operation, he is looking forward to reviewing the webinar on load boards, which ran a few weeks ago.

“I like the archive because I can do it at my own speed,” Greg said.

Few business-training seminars offer OOIDA’s experience and knowledge of trucking-related topics, especially those relevant to owner-operators. The 2012 series is no exception.

This series of webinars gives truckers a one-two punch with some programs designed to help drivers understand rules, regulations and industry requirements, while other courses teach participants about the business side of trucking.

Webinars cover topics such as transitioning from company driver to owner-operator, the authority process, using load boards and more.

OOIDA designed the program with convenience and truckers’ schedules in mind.

“Webinars are presented by industry professionals in a user-friendly format delivered directly to the participant’s computer,” OOIDA Webinar Host Tom Gann said.

Programs can be viewed during the original airing, and participants can revisit the material later at their convenience. Or they can sign up to view any program in the easy-to-access archive files, which are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

There are two programs a month, each lasting about an hour. All programs are designed to help drivers at all levels in their career. Truckers can purchase the entire course, or choose individual programs, or pick several webinars with smaller, affordable package deals.

The last webinar in the 2012 series will be a roundtable discussion of what lies ahead in 2013. That webinar airs Dec. 13, 2012. Don’t miss it.
