CARB: large fleets need more time to register for CA rule

The California Air Resources Board has proposed an emergency amendment to its greenhouse gas rule for truck trailers, also known as the SmartWay trailer rule.

Owners of truck fleets with 21 or more trailers would be able to submit their information for either of the rule’s two compliance schedules by June, 2012.

CARB said it believes many large fleets were unaware that the rule had required trailer owners to submit their compliance information by July 2010, and said many trailer owners were waiting for the California Office of Administrative Law to approve last year’s amendments to the greenhouse gas trailer rule.

CARB estimates the regulation affects more than 1 million trailers as of 2010, and will affect nearly 1.5 million trailers by the year 2020.
