In North Carolina, a UPS driver was killed early Wednesday, Jan. 18, when his tractor-trailer hit the guardrail on a bridge on Interstate 85 about 40 miles north of Charlotte.

The Charlotte Observer reports 58-year-old Garry Darnell Wilkerson of Chesterfield, NC, was pulling double trailers and that one of them went over the guard rail and crashed onto a road below. Wilkerson was ejected from the cab on impact. It was reported that he was not wearing a seat belt.

A spokesman for UPS said Wilkerson was completing the first part of a routine trip from Richmond, VA, to Charlotte. After arriving, he was set to return with a shipment to Richmond.

The UPS spokesman told North Carolina news sources that Wilkerson had a good driving record and that the company was looking into the possibility that a front tire may have blown out.
